Vegetable tanned leather is an organic and delicate material and will develop a natural patina over time. If cared for in the right way it can last a lifetime. Regularly cleaning and restoring the leather will keep it supple and protect against staining. Scuff marks and scratches are sometimes sadly unavoidable, but they can be reduced with gentle rubbing. Rain, water drops, grease, perfumes, inks and direct light or heat may leave permanent damage to the leather which cannot be reversed and be aware of colour transfer from dark to light clothing and vice versa, denim can cause staining on lighter leathers. It is widely known that farming and ranching for meat are significant drivers in deforestation and climate change. More recently there has been a movement of farmers who have used modern knowledge and age old expertise to counter these negative impacts. Regenerative and rotational farming allows livestock to play an essential role in the maintenance of soil health, and healthy soil draws down and stores carbon from the atmosphere. It is therefore our belief that farming can be the very solution to the problem it has created over time.

Over the course of 2022, it is NARU STUDIOS' goal to continuously increase the amount of regenerative leathers used in our products - mainly focusing on UK producers - with the aim of a purely regenerative future. Offering products that use a balance of organic and regenerative leathers, and truly plant based leather alternatives (Plastic and Polyurethane free) is the future for the leather goods industry and will create a much smaller carbon footprint than the majority of today’s luxury fashion and accessories brands.

No. Our 'rhubarb leather' is an organic bovine leather from one of our tannery partners in Germany. This tannery uses rhubarb roots to tan the leather, which have been sourced as a by-product from the food industry - allowing the leather to degrade in just 1.5 years when composted in optimum conditions.

Another of our tannery partners' in Tuscany produces leather that derives its colour from mimosa tree bark which is sourced as a by-product from sawmills. This method is centuries old and traditional to the region in Italy.
